Essential Planning Guide
Vibe & Scenery
Hidden in the upper Asi Ganga Valley, Mukta Top offers a quieter alternative to Uttarakhand's better-known winter trekking destinations. The trail climbs steadily through forests of oak, rhododendron, and Himalayan bamboo before emerging onto broad ridgelines with expansive mountain views.
From the summit area, trekkers enjoy clear panoramas of Bandarpoonch, Black Peak (Kalanag), and surrounding Garhwal peaks. During spring, blooming rhododendrons add vibrant colour to the forests, while winter transforms the route into a scenic snow trek.
Moderate gradients, relatively low technical difficulty, and peaceful campsites make Mukta Top suitable for trekkers with good fitness looking beyond the state's more established winter trails.

Editor's Notes
6-day route reaching 11,820ft. Covers 22.0km of varied terrain.
→ See full itinerary with altitude profileRated challenging. The trail is largely well-defined through forests in the lower sections. Above Chaithathar, the path becomes a snow-covered alpine meadow in winter, requiring gaiters and microspikes to prevent slipping.
→ See difficulty breakdown and fitness guidePackages range from 7,500 - 10,000 INR. Inclusions and hidden costs vary by operator tier.
→ See full cost breakdownMukta Top is an excellent alternative to Kedarkantha. It offers a very similar altitude (11,820 ft) and stunning winter snowscapes, but with a fraction of the crowd. The forests on the Mukta Top trail (bamboo and oak) are arguably denser and richer in wildlife.
Yes, it is graded as Easy to Moderate, making it highly suitable for fit beginners. The altitude gain is gradual, and there are no technical climbing sections, though the summit day requires a fair amount of endurance in the snow.
No technical mountaineering gear is required. However, during the winter months (December to April), trekking poles with snow baskets, microspikes, and gaiters are strictly necessary to safely navigate the hard-packed and deep snow sections near the summit.
During December to February, daytime temperatures hover between 8°C to 15°C. However, nighttime temperatures at high camps like Chaithathar and Mukta Tal can plummet to -5°C to -10°C, requiring high-quality down jackets and sleeping bags.
The Asi Ganga valley is rich in biodiversity. Trekkers often spot Himalayan Monals (the state bird), various species of pheasants, and occasionally signs of Himalayan Black Bears or leopards in the dense lower forests. Always stick to the trail.
The nearest major medical hub is the District Hospital in Uttarkashi, which is about an hour's drive from the base camp at Kuflon. Basic first aid must be carried on the trail.
Mobile networks (Jio, BSNL, Airtel) are available sporadically at the base camp in Kuflon. Once you begin the trek towards Shiladuni, you will lose all cellular connectivity for the duration of the trek.
Water is generally abundant at the campsites (Shiladuni, Chaithathar) from natural mountain streams. However, during peak winter, some smaller streams may freeze, requiring operators to melt snow. Always carry at least 2 liters of water daily.
