Difficulty & Readiness Guide
Graded hard, the Lalanti Chandratal Shepherd Circuit demands good cardio preparation — the final altitude push to 15200ft is the crux.
Preparation Required
Advanced
Prior Experience
Required: At least 2-3 moderate Himalayan treks (above 13,000ft).
Score Engine v3
Stamina
66/100
Based on average nightly altitude gain, highest campsite, and daily distance. Reflects how hard the average day feels.
Spike Day
46/100
Based on max altitude reached, summit day elevation gain, and summit day distance. Reflects the hardest single day.
A demanding expedition dominated by extreme joint & muscle impact.
Physiological Demand
Steep, punishing ascents and descents that will heavily tax your knees, ankles, and overall joint stability.
Extreme high altitude exposure. Severe oxygen depletion requires careful acclimatization and peak cardiovascular health.
Expect long, exhausting days of sustained climbing at high intensity. Your cardiovascular system will be pushed to its absolute limit.
Rough, uneven trails with occasional scrambling or minor exposure.
Multi-day camping requiring mental toughness to handle weather and fatigue debt.
Crux Section
Day 2 — Oxygen Peak
Highest exposure point at 15,200ft.
The Tent Stakes
Caution
The Chandra Tal plateau generates a venturi wind effect that regularly generates 70-80 km/h gusts at 3am. Standard tent stakes will pull out in these conditions. Use titanium or aluminum Y-stakes with carabiner-clip crosswire for extra security. Trekkers who ignore this have had tents destroyed at 14,000 ft at midnight.
High altitude cold desert, river crossings, and vast alpine pastures used by Gaddi shepherds.
The route traverses high ridges (often over 4,500m) to connect the Lalanti plains with the famous Chandratal lake.
Long gradual descents over loose scree.
Requires excellent stamina for long walking days in thin air.
The entire trek remains at a very high altitude; acclimatization before starting is mandatory.
Run AMS Risk Audit →Highest exposure point at 15,200ft.
Deep 3,100ft descent will test joint stability.
Day 5 requires the highest sustained output.
*Forecast derived from route geometry and altitude profile. External variables (weather/group) remain the final authority.

Loose Surface Sections
Most injuries and failures on this trail can be avoided by making smarter decisions early on.
Poor acclimatization planning, as the entire circuit remains above 4000 meters.
Running out of stove fuel because boiling water takes significantly longer at this altitude.
