DAY 1Scenic Drive

Today's Mission

Haridwar to Uttarkashi

Depart Haridwar early morning. Road follows the Bhagirathi River from Tehri onwards through dense forests. Uttarkashi (1,165 m) is the district headquarters and a well-equipped base town. Afternoon rest; visit Vishwanath Temple in the town for an evening warm-up. Uttarkashi has the last reliable ATMs and medical facilities before Gangotri.

Guide's Note • Preparation

Arriving in Uttarkashi gives you a comfortable base before the high-altitude shrines. Tomorrow begins before sunrise, so rest well tonight.

DAY 2 TEMPLE DARSHAN

Today's Mission

Visit Gangotri

Drive 100 km from Uttarkashi to Gangotri (3,100 m) — allow 3.5 hours each way. Depart no later than 5:00 AM. The temple is a 200-metre flat walk from the main parking area. Take a ritual dip or sprinkle Ganga jal at Bhagirathi Shila (the rock where King Bhagirath meditated). Harsil valley en route is exceptionally scenic — short photo stop recommended. Road narrows significantly above Harsil; congestion is common in peak season. Return to Uttarkashi for overnight.

Guide's Note • After the Darshan

Gangotri is where you can find quiet time by the Bhagirathi River after darshan. Leave enough time to sit by the water beyond the temple itself.

DAY 3Scenic Drive

Today's Mission

Uttarkashi to Barkot

Short, pleasant drive through Yamuna valley. Barkot (1,220 m) is the overnight base for the Yamunotri yatra. Arrive by early afternoon — rest is important before the next day's trek. Check pony and doli availability with local agents if needed for Day 4.

Guide's Note • Rest & Recovery

You've completed Gangotri. Tomorrow requires another early start for Yamunotri, so today is best spent resting your legs rather than sightseeing.

DAY 4 TEMPLE DARSHAN

Today's Mission

Visit Yamunotri

Drive 16 km from Barkot to Janki Chatti (1,500 m), the trek base. Trek is 6.5 km each way to Yamunotri temple (3,291 m) — the steepest and most physically demanding section of this Do Dham. The trail gains ~1,800 m over 6.5 km. Pony and doli available from Janki Chatti. Divya Shila puja is performed before entering the temple. Cook raw rice in the Surya Kund hot spring to take home as prasad — a unique ritual here. Depart Janki Chatti by 6:00 AM to complete the trek before afternoon cloud build-up.

Guide's Note • On the Trail

The trail rewards consistency more than speed. Stop for one minute every 20–30 minutes rather than taking one long break.

DAY 5Scenic Drive

Today's Mission

Barkot to Haridwar

Return drive along the same Yamuna–Rishikesh corridor. Arrive Haridwar by evening; attend Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri to close the yatra. Most operators end the tour at Haridwar.

Guide's Note • Back to the Plains

As the Bhagirathi valley disappears behind you, many travellers find themselves replaying the journey more than planning the next destination.
