The Shatul Pass (approximately 15,200 ft) is a little-documented high crossing on the eastern boundary of the Shimla district, connecting the apple orchard highlands of the Jubbal-Kotkhai area with the upper Pabbar-Kinnaur border zone. It forms part of an ancient shepherd migration network that links the rich lowland orchards and forests of the warm Shimla district valleys with the sparser, colder high pastures of the Kinnaur border — a route that remains active for shepherd families but is almost entirely unknown to organized trekking. The Jubbal-Kotkhai area is itself a remarkable base — one of the most productive and historically important apple-growing regions in Himachal Pradesh, with orchards that extend from valley floors at 6,000 ft to mountain flanks at 10,000 ft.
