Common Questions

Is the Marchoi Trek only a winter trek?
No, it is a year-round trek. In summer (June-September), it is a lush green, easy forest walk. However, its main fame and appeal is during the winter (December-March) when it becomes a pristine snow trek, unlike higher trails which become completely inaccessible.
How difficult is it in winter?
Rated as Easy to Moderate. The altitude gain is very gradual, topping out around 10,500 ft. The primary difficulty in winter is dealing with sub-zero temperatures (-10°C at night) and walking through knee-deep powder snow.
Do I need technical mountaineering gear?
You do not need ropes or ice axes. However, microspikes and gaiters are strictly mandatory in winter to prevent slipping on hard ice and keeping snow out of your boots.
Will my mobile phone work on the trek?
You will get a decent Jio or Airtel network up to Naranag village. Once you begin the trek towards Dumail, the signal will completely drop.
Are there any tea houses along the route?
There are local shops in Naranag, but beyond that, there is zero commercial infrastructure. You must carry all camping equipment and rations.
Is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) a risk here?
The risk is very low. The maximum altitude reached is around 10,500 ft, and the sleeping altitude at Dumail is roughly 8,000 ft. It is a very safe altitude profile.
Is it safe from avalanches?
Generally, yes. The trail follows river valleys and forested ridges that are mostly shielded from massive avalanche paths. However, local guides will assess the snow stability daily before pushing to Marchoi Top.
Can beginners do this trek?
Yes. If fully equipped with proper winter gear (down jackets, -15C sleeping bags), fit beginners can easily complete this trek, making it the perfect introduction to Himalayan winter camping.
