Drive a rugged road to Hadsar (the starting point for Manimahesh), but turn onto the trail heading towards Kugti. The trail is heavily wooded, passing through ancient Gaddi tribal settlements.

Leave the trees completely. The landscape turns into a harsh, lunar environment of massive scree slopes, terminal moraines, and icy streams. Establish the final advance base camp directly beneath the glacier.

Start at 2 AM. Rope up to cross the deeply crevassed glacier. The final 1,000 feet is an agonizing 60-degree ice and rock wall. Crest the pass and stare into the barren Lahaul desert. Descend quickly to avoid afternoon rockfall.
