Start at 2 AM. Rope up to cross the deeply crevassed glacier. The final 1,000 feet is an agonizing 60-degree ice and rock wall. Crest the pass and stare into the barren Lahaul desert. Descend quickly to avoid afternoon rockfall.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
A massive geographical shift. Walking through the dry, arid, red-rock canyons of Lahaul. The heat of the direct sun here is intense. Cross the river to reach the first remote villages.
Key Landmarks
Staying At
Board vehicles. Depending on your logistics, either head deeper into Lahaul to Keylong, or drive through the Atal Tunnel to immediately re-enter the lush Kullu valley at Manali.
