Essential Planning Guide
Vibe & Scenery
Khauli Pass is a little-known shepherd route in the Kullu Himalayas, traditionally used by local pastoral communities moving livestock between seasonal grazing grounds. Unlike popular treks around Manali, the trail remains relatively uncrowded and retains a distinctly local character.
Beginning from villages in the lower Kullu Valley, the route climbs through forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron before reaching open alpine meadows and the broad saddle of Khauli Pass. The pass provides sweeping views across both the Kullu Valley and the surrounding Pir Panjal mountains.
Without glaciers or technical terrain, Khauli Pass is well suited for trekkers seeking a quieter multi-day Himalayan trek focused on forests, ridgelines, and mountain scenery.

The Gaddi dogs guarding sheep in the high meadows are fiercely protective. Do not approach the flocks; let your guide negotiate passage with the shepherds.

Since the trail climbs up to 13000 ft, there is a distinct risk of AMS. Proper hydration, progressive pacing, and gradual acclimatization are highly advised.
Because it avoids massive glaciers, Khauli Pass has a slightly wider window than the elite 15,000 ft passes. It opens earlier in early June, and stays accessible well into late October. Avoid the July/August monsoon due to dense fog and slippery terrain.
Connectivity is highly sporadic. The last reliable mobile signal is at Drops in the forest on Day 1. Often pings with full 4G exactly at the 13,000 ft pass summit.. Expect complete digital isolation on the trail.
The last active ATM is located at Kullu Town. It is strongly recommended to withdraw sufficient cash at major transit hubs before starting.
Fresh stream water is abundant, but water treatment is mandatory. Boil stream water.
