Chandranahan Lake is a stunningly beautiful high-altitude glacial lake at 13,524 ft in Himachal's Rohru tehsil of Shimla district — the source of the Pabbar River. This 5-day moderate trek from Chirgaon passes through the same corridor as Buran Ghati but branches into a pristine valley featuring a vivid blue lake surrounded by permanent snowfields and the towering peaks of the Chanshal range. Far less crowded than Hampta Pass or Sar Pass, Chandranahan is Shimla district's premier offbeat lake trek.
Trek Highlights
The Seven Lakes Cirque
Standing at 14,000 ft looking down a staircase of cobalt blue glacial lakes, each at a different level, with permanent snowfields reflected in the still water.
Chandranahan Meadow at Sunset
The massive meadow basin turns golden at 6pm, with the surrounding 16,000 ft peaks casting long shadows over a carpet of wildflowers.
As of 2025, no formal entry permit is required. However, guided local operators from Chirgaon are mandatory for finding the upper trail which is unmarked above the treeline.
What is the best month to visit?
June and October are ideal. June offers the last of the wildflower bloom before monsoon arrives. October offers crystal skies, no crowds, and partially frozen lake edges for dramatic photos.
Can beginners attempt this?
Moderate fitness required. The ascent from the meadow camp to the lake cirque involves 1,800 ft of loose scree climbing which is tiring but technically straightforward.
How many lakes are there exactly?
Seven distinct glacial bodies are visible, ranging from small tarns to large reflective lakes. The highest two are partially frozen even in September.
Can I combine this with Buran Ghati?
Yes. The Chandranahan lake basin is the pre-summit camp for the Buran Ghati crossing. Adding 2-3 days extends the trek into a full Shimla-to-Sangla crossover expedition.
Is there a forest rest house?
Yes. There is a PWD rest house at Chirgaon and basic tented camps are set up at the meadow by operators during season.
What wildlife can I expect?
The high meadows are roaming grounds for Himalayan ibex and bharal. Snow leopard spoor has been found at the lake's edge. Monal pheasants are abundant in the lower forest.
Is there a vehicular road near the lakes?
No. The last motorable point is Chirgaon village, from where the trek begins. The lake cirque is fully roadless.
What is the water situation on the trail?
Abundant water throughout. The Chandranahan stream and its braids provide constant water from Day 2 onwards.
Should I hire a local guide?
Strongly recommended. The upper trail above the treeline is unmarked, and whiteout fog in the afternoon is common near the cirque from June to August.
