Essential Planning Guide
Vibe & Scenery
The Milam–Lapthal Expedition ventures far beyond the classic Milam Glacier trek into one of the least-explored regions of the eastern Kumaon Himalayas. Beginning in the historic Johar Valley, the route follows the ancient Indo-Tibetan trade corridor through remarkable settlements such as Burfu, Martoli, and Milam before reaching the immense snout of the Milam Glacier.
Beyond the glacier, the expedition enters the isolated Lapthal Plateau—a windswept trans-Himalayan landscape shaped by millions of years of geological history. Once part of the ancient Tethys Sea, this region is renowned for its marine fossils, including naturally preserved ammonites known locally as Shaligrams. The expedition combines abandoned trading settlements, frontier landscapes, ancient ITBP routes, and extraordinary geological diversity unlike anywhere else in the Indian Himalayas.
Designed for experienced wilderness travelers, the Milam–Lapthal Expedition offers a rare blend of Himalayan exploration, geological discovery, and cultural history.
