Kedarnath Yatra 2026: Opening Date & Complete Season Guide

Kedarnath 2026 Opening Date

Kedarnath temple will open for the 2026 yatra season on 22 April 2026. This date has been officially confirmed by the Char Dham Devasthanam Board.

The Char Dham portals open in this order:
→ Yamunotri: 19 April 2026
→ Gangotri: 19 April 2026
→ Kedarnath: 22 April 2026
→ Badrinath: 23 April 2026

The temple closes for winter in late October 2026, likely around Bhai Dooj (October 28-29, 2026). Exact closing date will be announced closer to the time.

Book your operator now — April and May slots fill within days of announcement.

Best Time to Visit Kedarnath in 2026

Late April (Opening — 22 April): Fresh snow on surroundings, very few crowds, cold temperatures (0-8°C at temple). Ideal for devotees who want a calm, uncrowded darshan experience. Book early — opening week slots are extremely limited.

May: Pleasant weather, moderate crowds, good trail conditions. Most popular month for families.

June: Warmer days, busier crowds. Good weather window before monsoon arrives.

July-August: Monsoon season. Trail can be slippery, risk of landslides. Visit only with experienced operators who know the route well.

September-October: Best overall. Clear skies, manageable crowds, beautiful autumn colours. October is especially scenic.

Avoid: July-August if possible. Best overall: Late April opening week or September-October.

Kedarnath Package Costs 2026

Package costs vary based on departure city, accommodation tier, and inclusions.

Economy packages (from Haridwar):
₹18,000 - ₹25,000 per person
Includes: Transport, basic hotel, meals, permits

Deluxe packages (from Haridwar):
₹28,000 - ₹40,000 per person
Includes: Private vehicle, better hotels, all meals, puja arrangements

Premium packages:
₹45,000 - ₹70,000 per person
Includes: Helicopter option, 5-star equivalent stays, VIP darshan, dedicated guide

All packages on MountRoutes follow a standard pricing format — what you see includes transport, meals, permits and insurance. No hidden costs. Helicopter charges are always extra and arranged separately.

Helicopter vs Trek to Kedarnath

This is the question we get asked most by first-time Kedarnath pilgrims. Here is the honest answer — not the one that sells more packages.

The trek (14 km from Gaurikund):

Most operators will tell you the trek takes 5-6 hours. That is for a fit 30-year-old moving at pace.

For a mixed family group, budget 7-9 hours one way. The trail gains over 1,400m in altitude. The first 4 km from Gaurikund are the steepest. After that it opens up.

Our operator data shows that groups with a guide ratio of 1:6 or better have significantly fewer medical incidents on this stretch than groups of 15+ with one guide.

Pony and palki are available throughout the route.
2026 government-regulated rates:
→ Pony: ₹3,500 - ₹5,000 one way
→ Palki: ₹6,000 - ₹8,500 one way
Book in advance during April-June.

The helicopter:

Eight minutes versus eight hours.
If you have elderly parents, young children, or a medical condition that makes altitude trekking risky — the helicopter is not a luxury, it is the right choice.

2026 rates: ₹7,500 - ₹12,000 per person one way.
Operates from Phata, Guptkashi, and Sirsi helipads.

Important: Helicopter slots for the April 22 opening week and entire May are already filling.
Book only via the official IRCTC portal or through an operator you trust. We have seen pilgrims lose money to fake helicopter booking agents — if the price seems too low, it almost certainly is.

Helicopter charges are not included in any standard MountRoutes package. They are arranged separately so you only pay if you need it.

Our honest take:
If you are physically able, trek at least one way. The route itself is the yatra. The helicopter gets you to the temple. The trek gets you to Kedarnath.

Kedarnath Registration & Permits 2026

We ask every operator we onboard one simple question during verification:
"Do you help pilgrims with biometric registration?"

The answer tells us a lot.

Biometric registration has been mandatory for all Kedarnath yatris since 2023. Yet every season, hundreds of pilgrims arrive at Gaurikund without it and are turned back. A good operator handles this before you leave home.

What registration involves:
→ Aadhar card (non-negotiable, original required)
→ Passport-size photograph
→ Medical fitness certificate if you are above 50 years of age
→ The actual registration is free — anyone charging for registration itself is overcharging you

Where to register:
→ Online via the official Char Dham portal (opens April 2026)
→ Offline counters at Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Dehradun
→ Your operator's team can assist at source city

Our honest advice:
Do not leave registration to the last day. Haridwar counters during peak May season have 2-3 hour queues. Online slots fill within minutes of opening.

When comparing operators on MountRoutes, check if registration assistance is part of their service — the good ones will mention it without being asked.

What to Pack for Kedarnath Yatra

After speaking with operators who have run Kedarnath groups for 10+ years, this is the packing list they actually give their pilgrims — not the generic one you'll find everywhere else.

The one thing most people get wrong:
They pack for Haridwar weather, not Kedarnath weather. At 3,583m, even a sunny May afternoon can turn cold within the hour. Pack for both.

What you actually need:

Clothing (non-negotiable):
→ Thermal inner layer — one set minimum, two if you run cold
→ A fleece or down jacket that fits in your daypack
→ Waterproof outer layer — not just a rain poncho, something windproof too
→ Broken-in walking shoes with ankle support. New shoes on this trail = blisters by km 4.
→ Woollen socks — 2 pairs minimum. Cotton socks get wet and stay wet.

Documents (in a waterproof pouch):
→ Aadhar original
→ Printed registration certificate
→ Operator booking confirmation
→ Emergency contact card — write it by hand, phones die

Health (the part operators care about):
→ Your personal medications, enough for 2 extra days
→ Diamox (acetazolamide) if your doctor has recommended it for altitude — do not self-medicate
→ ORS sachets — dehydration is more common than altitude sickness on this route
→ Moleskin or blister plasters

What NOT to bring:
→ Large suitcases — lockers are available at Gaurikund
→ Expensive jewellery
→ More than ₹5,000 cash in one pocket

One thing to check with your operator:
Every operator listed on MountRoutes is required to carry a basic medical kit. Before you book, ask them specifically: "What is in your group medical kit and do you have a guide certified in first aid?" Their answer will tell you more than any rating score.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does Kedarnath open in 2026?

Kedarnath opens on 22 April 2026, confirmed by the Char Dham Devasthanam Board on Mahashivratri. This is the earliest opening in recent years — most seasons it opens between May 2-10. If you can travel in late April, crowds are a fraction of what you will see in May.

How much does Kedarnath yatra cost in 2026?

On MountRoutes, verified Kedarnath packages start from ₹18,000 per person (economy, from Haridwar) to ₹70,000+ for premium packages with helicopter options.

Every package price you see on MountRoutes includes transport, meals, permits and insurance. No operator can list with us using a price that excludes these. Helicopter charges are always separate — because not everyone needs them and you should not pay for what you do not use.

Is helicopter booking open for Kedarnath 2026?

Helicopter slots for April 22 opening week are already in demand. The IRCTC portal is the only official booking channel. Our strong advice: do not book helicopter through WhatsApp forwards or unknown agents, regardless of how good the price looks. Ask your MountRoutes operator — the verified ones know the official process and will not put your booking at risk.

Is the Kedarnath trek difficult?

Moderate is the honest answer — but moderate at 3,583m feels different from moderate at sea level.

The 14 km trail from Gaurikund gains 1,400m in altitude. Most healthy adults without specific cardiac or respiratory conditions complete it in 7-9 hours.

What makes it harder than expected: altitude, not distance. Go slow, drink water, and do not try to keep pace with younger trekkers in your group.

If you are above 50 or have any health concerns, get a medical fitness certificate before you go — it is required anyway and your doctor may have specific advice for your situation.

What documents are needed for Kedarnath 2026?

Aadhar card (mandatory), biometric registration certificate, and a medical fitness certificate for pilgrims above 50 years. Your MountRoutes operator will guide you through the complete registration process.

What is the best time to visit Kedarnath?

Based on operator feedback from groups that ran in 2024 and 2025:

Late April (opening week): Fewest crowds, fresh trail, very cold nights. Best for those who want a quiet darshan.

September-October: Best weather by far. Clear skies, manageable crowds, the mountain views are at their finest. October closures mean the last week can get crowded with pilgrims rushing before shutdown.

Avoid if possible: July-August. Operators we work with run reduced groups in monsoon and only with experienced guides who know the route in wet conditions.
